Any recommendations for an RPG available for PC with a strong plot and FFVII or FFVIII-like setting (fantasy world but with modern or futuristic technology)? 1t4jz

I’ve played very few games and nothing made within the last 15 years...

Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator, the Phantasy Star series, I heard that Elex was good, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Ignore the MMO) are the first to come to mind.

It's a bit more steampunk than modern, but the Legend of Heroes: Trails series are fantastic. I suggest starting from Trails in the Sky and then working your way to Trails of Cold Steel.

Arcanum
Breath of Fire IV
Chrono Trigger
Disco Elysium
FF IV to basically FF XV: Royal Edition are all on the PC
Grandia 1 (plot meh, game good) and Grandia 2
Planescape: Torment
Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Tales of Berseria (plot meh, game good), Tales of Symphonia (plot meh, game good), Tales of Vesperia
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (plot meh, game good and I don´t care for the other entries)
Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Chronicles 4 (plot meh, game good).

There is obviously stuff like Persona 4, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (plot meh, game good) or Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines but those are Uban Fantasy and all the Ys games have shitty plots. The 3 KOTOR games are more science than fantasy, Fallout and Mass Effect are purely sci-fi but there are still dozens of games that fit the bill on PCs. J-RPGs and PCs now get along again and W-RPGs always did even if your specific setting is a bit rarer here.
PS1 to PS3 emulation, Nintendo and Sega emulation is also easy to do on any modern PC. Which would make my list explode. You can also always ask on gamesites. resetera, reddit, etc. Even GameFAQs is good with listicles. Also Steam.

As mucch as I'd love to be detailed with my recommendations, I could just as simply tell you the one thing I've always wanted to say: "Go browse any game made by Idea Factory." You'll find so many worth playing.
