I enjoyed reading this. The art, plot and character development were there. My 3 main gripes that almost caused me to rage drop: FL Misao was absolutely infuriating. This is NOT smut. Near the end, it seemed like there wouldn't be a happy ending, but thankfully it didn't end in a tragedy.

I wouldn't read it again because the FL really was aggravating, but I would definitely recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

Black Bird was my ticket entry into the shoujo manga. Thus some of the occurring cliches in the genre didn't impact me as it might have others and it has a special place in my heart. I liked the relationship between the characters, the art, plot and the gory bits. A nicely wrapped package I'd say.

I left this series a while a back and honestly, I was drawn to the Smut and Fantasy aspect. It's your regular cool, aloof guy (can he be Tsundere? but she was his main reason for living) and the crybaby damsel in distress. I was quite skeptical with how I felt by reading it since this manga was highly rated. It was enjoyable with the Youkai and the forbidden love, etc. I really hate mangas that have damsels where everyone is falling all over her (except for Red River, sorry that's my bias) and her special ability is just to love and be loved. Honestly, she was just crying non-stop. But then, I did promise myself to finish this. Well, also hated one thing in the spoiler.

Misao didn't really do anything profound in this story. Everything was solved by her man. But, I got teary-eyed towards the end when I thought she was dead. I just hate it when MCs die. I avoid it at all costs.

Really wished too that a chapter was created for Kyou loving his son. It was good that the chapter with Kyou exploding on Sou was good for the story's flow. But, I still feel that Sou will forever carry that trauma that his father still blames him. When, in the first, the child was created by Kyou and Misao.

To end it all, I still prefer female MCs that are insatiable/unique to their partners. I.e. Midnight Secretary where her blood is only addicting to the male MC (tsundere, but still totes better)

I did finish it, though. Was looking for ways for Misao to redeem herself but really what can you expect from a 16-17 y/o. 😓 Read for the Smut and Youkai...

Cliché and Predictable

I love shoujo mangas that was drawn from 2006- 2009. Most manga from those time the art style pretty much looks the same and I love the plot although yes mostly are cliché. Okay, so Black Bird was okay at first we have our tsundere amd naive heroine who can see yokais and constantly being targeted by them and as you know it her significant other is a good looking guy that every girl would fall in love with. As the story goes on Misao is becoming more annoying. She's always a damsel in distress, sure she wants to be useful but in the end always being saved by Kyou, always blaming herself for everything that's happening, cries a lot I mean a LOT like every chapter and an idiot who doesn't learn from what happened. Kyou on the other hand is a possessive that would get jealous at everything and anything that Misao would say that involves any guy from the past and constantly spoiling Misao. Also what I didn't like is how some characters could easily predict what's going on. Would have been good if the story wasn't too predictable.

I'm not yet finished reading (about halfway) but I can already say what the manga is like.
The idea itself is nice, but cliche. Girl wants boyfriend, old love shows up and claims her to be hers, they become a couple. Eh, quite boring... However, he's a youkai. All the youkai look really cool, have some interesting backstory and that's the main reason why I continue reading.
After reading the first few chapters I was like "Huh? They love each other? They want to marry? What the f*** ist supposed to happen during the next 70 chapters?!" Well, I'm still wondering about that. Somehow the mangaka was able to drag this story on and on and somehow there come new problems which wouldn't be problems if the characters would just open their mouth once and don't try to solve everything by killing (which is a main trait of youkai according to this manga).
The most ridiculous thing is probably this: Suddenly the main girl's love (Kyou) becomes her math teacher. Why? Well, there's no logic behind that at all! Probably the mangaka wanted to write some scenes at school and didn't know how else to place Kyou there. They don't care at all about their relationship being a student-teacher one. It doesn't even strike their mind that the main girl's parents could find out that her boyfriend and neighbor is also her teacher. I mean, that should be hard to hide, right? Nope, not in this manga.
I was also wondering what this girl did before she reunited with Kyou. She has no personality at all. Her only reason for living is Kyou. She doesn't have hobbies, she doesn't have any likes or dislikes. All she does is love Kyou and cry in every single chapter. Oh, and be chased by evil demons who want to eat her.
Compared to that Kyou is the cool, adult-like, super-handsome boyfriend who is quite perverted and will do anything for his beloved princess (especially kill people who get near her).

All in all, you should only read this manga if you're looking for a manga which 1. you can stop reading in the middle of a chapter and 2. features youkai.

EDIT: I'm finished now and I will not change my mind regarding who should read this only. However, the story became slightly more interesting towards the end. Not the end, not the middle, but that thingy in-between. Especially the side characters showed themselves much and as I expected they're really good. Until the end I don't understand Shou though, seems like he has two personalities...

Absolute love

For my age (lol) shoujos do seem a little out of hand sometimes and really strange? Some things are just unrealistic (putting aside that this is supernatural), like a lot of “why’s” came to mind and some over dramatic circumstances made me laugh at how silly it was, but having that in mind, I absolutely loved this, Kyo is just superbly sweet and caring and Misao even though very typical, also very cute and likable. I just think this was love overboard, so much love till the point it makes your heart ache , I am really glad I took the time to read it; all the characters were so nice (although Shou was extremely pitiful) and overall very tender and even funny
P.s with a little spoiler: some people complained in the comments about Kyo mistreating his child, but it wasn’t that big of a deal and some outburst actually made sense, like a lot. ANW I loooved it my inner younger self appreciates it lol

It was good i mean i didnt want to stop readin although the ending was a little disappointing... i mean i get that the childs birth almost killed your wife but once you see your Child your heart just cant help but love them. I know he loved misao alot theres no doubt but that love is different than the love youve got for your kid. Great story just wished they'd showed kyou loving his kid despite everything that happened.

was about to beat his son, so okay later it was all happy but who know when, down the road, he's triggered again since all he really cares about is his wife

i liked it, i didn't mind kyo (i don't mind alot op characters, i just don't care about them)
But i was really dissapointed the way he treated his kid. Ruined (almost) everything.
Gotta love the kids
