Description

A good manga that tries too hard

Firstly, this manga has nothing to do with the Black Jack franchise but that of course doesn´t mean anything.
The story follows an intern throughout 3 stages of internship and has no real beginning or true ending (yes i know the is a sequel) which as other have noted is a small negative point.
The other problem is that this manga is too dramatic. I read it all in one sitting and the main character is just too crazy impulsive and selfish and even if there are hardships along the way for him in the end is "radical thinking" is always proven right which i find one-sided and problematic.
The other problem is the over the top drama. Yes the situations are well researched and realistic but all go one or two steps to far into forced drama territory. For example the third and last story about mental illness has a school stabbing that comes right at the turning point for one of the characters story just to create drama for him.
Yes i accuse the author of "shock deaths" of children just to make his manga more dramatic and interesting.
Also, some of the actions the doctors take come off as slightly illegal (i have seen and read a lot of medical series but of course could be wrong) but the final goal always justifies the means.
So why the high score? Well if you overlook the forced conflicts, suspend your disbelieve and just become engrossed in the story you realize it is quite good and well drawn. The manga asks some tough questions is never dull and actually earns its mature tag without a ridiculous amount of tits and gore. All in all this is a good but flawed drama for fans of Black Jack just a bit "worse".

Volume 01 to Volume 13 in English. Reing is allowed by the author so this is perfectly fine.

I'm sorry for not adding a much better comment but I gave it an 8 out of 10 because the end is hanging (well, there's a sequel). The whole story takes place during his intern, it's nice watching him grow, and how some people are actually by his side rather than him being a one-man army.

So the rating should've been a 9 out of 10 but why another point taken? Well, the first internship feels a bit cut-off from the rest. Also, at first I thought this manga was going the medical dragon route (as in, unskilled doctors AND problematic system) but I don't know, something else happened. This is more of Dr Saito's diary if you would say. You'll understand when you read it. Last review was 3 years ago, and just recently, the whole series was released in english.

Brilliant manga that stems to some serious thinking. Not just about the medical world, but the ugliness of human nature itself. I've read the entire first series, but alas it's been discontinued in my native language. (or should I say that the continuation hasn't been picked up) I feel sorry for everyone that's ing this up, because it's by far one of the strongest manga I've ever read.

The art is extremely powerful as well.

This is undoubtedly, the best medical series I've read which actually and seriously tackles the gray-faceted moral issues that often confound the medical world. It's a darn shame this series is vastly overlooked by most readers and hasn't been picked up by any other scanlator or even publisher.

I've got to say, this is one mind-gripping, tear-jerking manga. It encourages the reader to think about certain moral issues and the expressive art enforces that aspect.
The story itself could be divided in certain parts, each where the protagonist deal with different kind of decisions in other medical departments. With strong characters to back up the story and great character and story development, it is hard not to like it.
